The self-help industry enrages me. It has for years. Not because it fails, but because it succeeds in all the wrong ways. The heroes are well-lit predators who prey on longing. Their siren song: “You’re broken, but lucky you, we sell recovery.”


This is a personal piece from the archives. I’m skeptical whether I should have published it. For that reason, it’s behind a paywall. I figure that those who paid for access will be somewhat cordial in their responses. (Hopefully)
